Acknowledging that the basketball superstar had probably never even been to Cedar Rapids, Mayor Paul Barnes still thought harnessing the athletes’ fame could draw visitors to the city.
“Heck, they made a butter statue of her and I don’t even know if she likes butter,” Barnes said. “At least she lived for a time in the same area code as we do.”
Barnes said statue designs featuring a Greek goddess going for a layup are preliminary and may be revised to resemble a mythic creature shooting a logo three.
“Nothing’s final, but I wanted to get something out there before North Liberty tried to steal our idea.”
