As it nears its 75th birthday, the city of Hiawatha has decided it’s time to move on from its cool, hip persona and act its age. As a result, the City Council on Monday approved a resolution to change the city’s name to “Hello-watha” in recognition of its advanced age.
“Let’s face it, we kind of held on to the rebellious teen image a bit longer than we should have,” said Hiawatha Mayor Ben Robinson. “It’s time we begin acting our age. No one believes that we’re a kid anymore.”
The Council considered other changes, including changing bike lanes to golf cart lanes and reducing all city speed limits to 8 miles per hour. But after lengthy discussion Council Members tabled the actions, citing a desire not to rush pell-mell into anything.
